Try scuba in Casa Cenote with an instructor beside you.

What you will do

The morning is built for first-timers: clear briefing, shallow practice, comfort checks, and a slow Casa Cenote dive only after the basics feel manageable.

1
Meet, fit gear, and talk through the planWe start around 8:15 am with a relaxed briefing, equipment fitting, and time for questions. You will learn what each part of the scuba kit does before putting it on.
2
Practice in shallow water firstBefore the dive, you get used to breathing through the regulator, clearing your mask, equalizing, floating, and using simple hand signals.
3
Dive Casa Cenote with your instructorOnce you feel ready, your instructor leads a slow, shallow dive through Casa Cenote. You stay under direct supervision the whole time.
4
Debrief and talk next stepsAfter the dive, we talk about what felt good, what felt challenging, and whether Basic Diver, Scuba Diver, or Open Water Diver makes sense for your trip.

What is included

  • Instructor briefing and direct supervision
  • Full scuba equipment for training
  • Shallow-water skill practice before the dive
  • 1 guided Casa Cenote dive
  • Safety checks, comfort checks, and debrief
  • Next-step course advice

Why Casa Cenote works for first-time divers

Casa Cenote is one of our favorite places for a first scuba experience in Tulum because it gives you clear water, calmer conditions than the ocean, and a beautiful natural setting without boat logistics on day one.

You practice in shallow water first, then move into the dive only when you are ready. It still feels like a real Tulum dive, but the pace is built around comfort, breathing, and learning how scuba feels.

  • Clear water and shallow areas for practice
  • Protected cenote setting compared with waves or boat entries
  • Mangrove scenery and a gentle introduction to buoyancy
  • A real guided dive with direct instructor supervision

What the SSI Basic Diver program covers

Basic Diver is a recognized SSI beginner program, but it does not certify you to dive independently. SSI lists the program as one academic session, one confined-water session, and one open-water session with an SSI Professional.

The official training limit is up to 12 m / 40 ft, the suggested duration is 10-12 hours, and the minimum age is 10. You do not need a previous scuba certification, but you do need to be fit to swim and complete the required forms before getting in the water.

  • Minimum age 10
  • Maximum training depth 12 m / 40 ft
  • No previous scuba certification required
  • Can credit toward Scuba Diver or Open Water Diver within 6 months

Safety, nerves, and comfort

Your instructor stays close enough to help at all times. We begin with simple skills in shallow water, check comfort often, and keep the dive slow.

If you need more time, we take more time. If you decide scuba is not for you that day, that is okay too. The goal is a calm first underwater experience, not rushing through a checklist.

Not the best fit if...

If you already know you want a full certification, SSI Open Water Diver is usually a better use of your time. If you want a shorter certification route but still expect to dive with professional supervision, SSI Scuba Diver may fit better.

If you are very nervous in water, have trouble swimming, or have medical questions, contact us before booking so we can help you choose the safest option.

Good fit for this course

Basic Diver is a good fit if you want to try scuba properly, but you do not want to spend several days on a full certification yet. It works well for curious first-time divers, couples where one person is unsure, travelers with one free morning, and anyone considering Open Water Diver but not ready to commit.

  • First-time divers who want a real dive, not only a pool demo
  • Guests with one free morning in Tulum
  • People who want instructor support close by the whole time
  • Travelers deciding between Basic Diver, Scuba Diver, and Open Water Diver

Frequently asked questions

Is Basic Diver a full certification?

No. Basic Diver is an introductory scuba experience, not a full certification. You’ll receive a digital recognition card and may dive with an SSI Open Water Instructor for up to 6 months before upgrading to Open Water Diver or repeating the program.

Do I need scuba experience?

No previous scuba experience is required. You should be fit to swim, comfortable enough in the water to learn safely, and able to follow simple safety instructions.

How deep will we go?

SSI Basic Diver allows training dives up to 12 m / 40 ft with an SSI Professional. The actual dive profile depends on site conditions, standards, and your comfort.

What if I get nervous or cannot equalize?

Tell your instructor right away. We practice first, move slowly, and can pause, stay shallower, or stop if you are not comfortable. You are not expected to force it.

Where does the dive happen?

The planned dive is at Casa Cenote, a clear and beginner-friendly cenote near Tulum. Conditions and logistics are confirmed before the training day.

What is the minimum age?

SSI lists the minimum age for Basic Diver as 10. Minors need the required forms reviewed and signed by a parent or guardian.

Are there medical forms?

Yes. SSI training requires the appropriate training record and medical forms before participation. Some medical answers may require physician approval before diving.

Can this lead into Open Water?

Yes. SSI says the Basic Diver program can be credited toward Scuba Diver or Open Water Diver within 6 months. Ask your instructor how that would work for your schedule.
