What SSI Scuba Diver certification means

Scuba Diver is a real SSI certification, but it is not the same as Open Water Diver. It certifies you for supervised dives with a dive professional, usually to a maximum training depth of 12 m / 40 ft.

SSI describes the program as nearly half of the Open Water Diver course. If you want to continue, you can upgrade by completing the remaining academic sessions, confined-water work, and two additional open-water training dives.

  • Minimum age 10
  • Maximum training depth 12 m / 40 ft
  • 3 academic sessions, 2 confined-water sessions, and 2 open-water sessions
  • No previous scuba certification required

Why this course works well in Tulum

Tulum gives new divers two very useful training environments: clear cenote water for calm skill-building and the Caribbean reef for open-water experience when conditions allow.

That mix helps the course feel practical rather than abstract. You are not just checking boxes; you are learning how scuba feels in the kinds of places you may actually want to dive on your trip.

  • Casa Cenote is useful for controlled beginner practice
  • Reef dives add boat, current, and ocean context when conditions allow
  • Instructor feedback helps you decide whether to upgrade to Open Water
  • Small-group training keeps the pace easier to manage

Not the best fit if...

If you only want to try scuba once, Basic Diver is probably the better fit. If you know you want to dive independently with a buddy on future trips, Open Water Diver is usually the better investment.

If you are very nervous in water, have trouble swimming, or have medical questions, contact us before booking so we can help you choose the safest starting point.

Good fit for this course

Scuba Diver is a good fit if you want a recognized beginner certification and real in-water training, but you do not have enough time for the full Open Water Diver course. It is also useful if you prefer to keep diving with a guide or instructor rather than planning independent buddy dives right away.

  • New divers who want certification, not just a try-dive
  • Travelers with less time than Open Water requires
  • Guests comfortable with basic swimming and learning in the water
  • People who expect to dive with professional supervision on future trips

Who is this course best for?

It is best for new divers who want a real certification but have limited time, or who prefer to keep diving with professional supervision after training.

Do I need prior scuba experience?

No previous scuba certification is required. SSI lists the prerequisites as fit to swim with no certification prerequisites.

How deep can I dive with Scuba Diver?

SSI lists the maximum training depth as 12 m / 40 ft. Your actual dives depend on standards, conditions, and instructor judgment.

How long does it take?

SSI lists a suggested duration of 10-16 hours. In Tulum, plan around two focused training days so there is time for learning, practice, dives, and debriefs.

Can I upgrade to Open Water Diver?

What if I am unsure between Scuba Diver and Basic Diver?

Choose Basic Diver if you mainly want to try scuba once. Choose Scuba Diver if you want certification and expect to dive again with professional supervision.
